5 Ways Health Departments Can Improve Relations with Assisted Living Operators

Health departments play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in assisted living facilities. However, the relationship between health departments and assisted living operators can sometimes be strained. We offered an earlier blog on how assisted living operators can improve relations with the health department, so it’s only fair to also provide health departments some suggestions on how they can improve relations with assisted living operators. Here are the top 5 ways health departments can create a more collaborative environment to promote the health and safety of people in assisted living:

  1. Communicate clearly and consistently: Health departments should provide clear, consistent guidance to assisted living operators on the regulations and standards that apply to their facilities. This includes providing detailed information on how to meet requirements, as well as clear explanations of any deficiencies identified during inspections.

  2. Be responsive and supportive: Health departments should respond to assisted living operators' questions and concerns in a timely and supportive manner. This includes providing assistance and guidance on how to correct any deficiencies identified during inspections.

  3. Foster a collaborative approach: Health departments should work with assisted living operators to identify and address issues related to the health and safety of residents. This includes working together to develop plans for addressing deficiencies and implementing quality improvement initiatives.

  4. Recognize and acknowledge good practices: Health departments should recognize and acknowledge assisted living operators who demonstrate a commitment to providing high-quality care and meeting regulations. This can include providing recognition through awards or certifications.

  5. Provide training and education: Health departments should provide training and education opportunities for assisted living operators and staff to help them stay up-to-date on the latest regulations and best practices. This can include workshops, webinars, and other training programs.

By implementing these strategies, health departments can help build stronger, more positive relationships with assisted living operators. This, in turn, can lead to improved quality of care for residents and a better overall experience for everyone involved.

This approach is contrasted with the idea that the health of residents can be improved by leveling more punishment at assisted living operators. We at Pinkowski Law strongly believe that punishment is not the way to improve health care. See more on this topic in our blog “Is Punishment A Rational Public Policy Approach To Health Care?”.
